Whenever I look at a shopping mall's escalator, I will fell queasy and cold sweat would drip down my forehead. I could vividly remember the incident which took place five years ago, when I was in primary six. Since that incident, I have a phobia of taking escalators and will always take the lift. It all happened like this...
It was a blistering hot Friday afternoon. John, my best friend, and I were at United Square shopping for food - marshmallows, chicken and hot-dogs for my birthday barbeque the next day. We decided to eat mouth-watering ice cream first as we could not spot a supermarket in sight.
While savouring the scrumptious ice-cream, my eyes glanced around. I gestured for John to hold my ice cream as I squinted my eyes to look for an information counter.
"John! I spotted an information counter! I will go down to ask where is the supermarket," I exclaimed. Before John could say anything, I made a dash for the information counter, making zig-zacs and people. Like an expert, I dashed down the escalator, eyes fixed on the counter.
Just then, a sudden sharp pain shot through my right let. I glanced down. To my horror, my foot was stuck in the escalator! I was initially taken aback and could only stare in shock. Seconds later, I came to my senses and began frantically tugging at my leg. The pain was becoming more excruciating by the second. I felt as if my whole foot was being ripped off. I was approaching the end of the escalator. My hands turned clammy. I wanted to shout for help but nothing came out of my mouth.
Just at that instant, a man formally dressed saw me. Alert, he pressed the emergency button. A middle-aged woman covered her mouth in shock. After regaining her composure, she pointed to me and made a beeline for the information counter, seeking for help.
"James! Are you alright?" it was John. His jaws dropped when he saw me stuck. He rushed towards me and fished his phone out from his pocket, dialing for the ambulance. John comforted me and told me that everything would be alright and the paramedics and Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) were arriving soon.
I grimaced in pain. Tears were welling up in my eyes but I blinked them away, wanting to put up a brave front. There were many onlookers that stood there, pointing at me and taking photos of my suffering. I was aghast.
Minutes seemed like hours and finally, the paramedics and officers from the SCDF arrived. The SCDF officers used special tools and gears to expand the hole and slowly remove my poor feet. By that time, it was swollen. The well-trained paramedics carefully lifted me on the stretcher and with full speed, rushed me to the nearest hospital. My parents were notified and they arrived to the hospital in no time.
The doctor bandaged my leg in a cast and told me that I had to stay in the hospital for observation for three days before I could get discharged.
I will never forget it. Not in this lifetime. This incident will remain with me forever and ever. It made my have my birthday in a hospital room.
