An Accident
Question: I was alone at home when the phone rang unexpectedly. I was shocked when I heard a cry at the other end of the line.
Minutes seemed like hours. The ambulance still did not arrive at the scene. I was feeling guilty as every minute passed. I was so irresponsible! If I had brought Max out for a walk myself, things would not have turned out this way. I hugged Max tightly. Blood was gushing out of its wound and he seemed weaker and weaker. Max was whimpering in pain. I recalled what had happened fifteen minutes ago...
I had finally finished my homework marathon! I jumped for joy as I rushed to the kitchen to grab a packet of chips before making a beeline for the sofa to catch my favourite show, Spongebob Squarepants. As Mum and Dad were out at work, I was at home with my domestic helper, Sue and my pet dog, Max. While I was watching Spongebob Squarepants running around in my television, Max approached me.
"Not now Max! Go play ball yourself!" I mumbled, my eyes glued to the television. Max did not give up. He continued rubbing his head on my hands, begging me to bring him out.
I immediately called for Sue. Sue leashed Max and brought him out of a stroll. Finally! The house was in peace! Nobody to stop me from watching television!
After a few minutes, I found myself breaking into peals of laughter. Out of the blue, the house phone rang. Using one hand to reach for the annoying phone, I continued to watch television. However, I was shocked to hear a cry of distress at the other end of the line. It was Sue!
"Help! Max... Max is bleeding!" Sue screamed. I slowly questioned her what had happened. Upon hearing her reply, my jaws dropped. All of a sudden, I felt anxious.
Sue had told me that Max was hit by a flower pot that was thrown down from a high floor. They were just near the void deck of my house!
I put down the phone. Grabbing the house keys, I dashed down. Once the lift doors opened to the ground floor, I rushed out. A crowd was gathered there. Elbowing my way through the crowd. I was appalled to see Max lying there motionless. I signaled for someone to call the ambulance.
The reverberating sirens of the ambulance brought me back to the present. I looked at Max on the stretcher. My hands were clammy. All of a sudden, I felt scared, really scared.
Luckily, after two hours in the operating theatre, the doctor told me that it was very lucky that the flower pot was made of plastic and not glass, if not, it could have caused more serious injuries, and even death! I heaved a sigh of relief.
Hugging Max tightly, I vowed to take more responsibility of Max as I was its owner. I will never let history repeat itself ever, ever again!

Loan Sharks compo again!
Question: You had arranged with a friend in the park at 4'o clock one afternoon. By 5'o clock, your friend had still not arrived.
It was another tranquil afternoon. I had arranged with Tina to play in the park. Tina is my classmate and neighbour. Although her father is a gambler, she is not looked-down upon because of her ever amiable behaviour.
Time passed, and I waited and waited. Looking at many people come and go, I was puzzled. Tina is not a late-comer, she loved being early and was very particular about being late! Glancing at my watch, I was taken-aback at the time. It was 5'o clock! One hour late! Getting rather impatient, I made up my mind to go to her house to find her as I did not bring my mobile phone with me.
"I am sure going to give Tina a piece of my mind when I meet her!" I muttered under my breath. Upon reaching the tenth floor, which was where Tina's house was located, I was astounded to see three burly man knocking on Tina's door with all their might. I scrutinized them from head to toe. All three of them had the same tattoo depicting a red serpent plastered on their right arm. One of them had a parang in his hand. "Could they be loan sharks?" I wondered.
Immediately, I hid behind the trolley placed near Tina's house, getting the closest view I could. "Pay up now! If not," the loan shark bellowed, waving his parang in the air," You will die!" I gasped at hearing this. The loan sharks were aggressive. They threw shoes and smashed ceramic flower pots in to smithereens.
My instincts told me that something was about to happen to poor Tina. Tiptoeing to the lift, I made a dash when the lift door opened.
Just when the lift door opened, I made a beeline for the nearby public phone. Dialling '999', I hoped that the police would come to Tina's rescue soon.
Ten to fifteen minutes later, the wails of sirens could finally be heard. I heaved a sigh of relief. I led them up to Tina's house. However, by that time, the loan sharks were gone! They must have escaped!
Tina was escorted out of the house. Her face was pale with fright and she was sweating. I took her from the police's hand and calmed her down. The police were busy with their investigation. Some of them were investigating the crime scene, some were taking down our statements, while some police were out to search for Tina's father. I comforted Tina that all matters would be resolved by the police. She nodded her head and thanked me for the helping hand I extended to her.
I hope that Tina's father would learn his lesson not to gamble and borrow money from the loan sharks forever, as what he is doing is hurting and harming his family!

MRT Breakdown!
It was another mundane day at school - more homework, more tests and more projects. I trudged wearily to the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station to wait for the train that would take me home. I stared at my watch impatiently while waiting for the train to arrive. When it arrived, I dashed into the train and grabbed a seat to rest my tired legs. I could feel the cool breeze from the air-conditioner carassing my face. Stifling a yawn, I decided to take forty winks.
I could feel myself falling into a sweet slumber when suddenly the train jerked, causing me to surge forward. Thinking it was just nothing, I continued resting my eyes, unaware of my surroundings. All of a sudden, the train screeched and came to a sudden stop. Frowning, I rubbed my eyes open but only to see pitch-black darkness.
I screamed. The lady beside me screamed. Pandemonium soon broke out. The ventilation stopped, the air-conditioner was also not functioning. I could see a beam of light. It came from a man's phone. The man shone the light around the train, asking if anyone was injured. Soon others followed. I glanced around, only to see an old man, seated next to me panting, clutching his chest. Quickly, I fished out my exercise book and fanned the old man. I could see a smile forming on on his face. I smiled back.
Out of the blue, the old man collapsed. Using my quick wits, I took my bag and placed it under the head of the old man. A group of teenagers who had seen what had happened, rushed towards the old man, checking for his pulse.
"Someone press the emergancy button! The old man collapsed!" I shouted at the top of my lungs. Cold sweat was dripping down my forehead. I was panicking, looking at the chaos around me. I was sure we were going to suffocate in the hell hole, before help arrived. Just as I was about to give up hope, another beam of light could be seen in the dark tunnel. It was the rescuers! Everyone squealed in delight.
When the rescuers pried open the train door, everyone rushed out of the MRT carriage like chained birds being released. The teenagers carried the old man up and carefully walked towards the nearest station.
Upon arrival, a loud voice blared over the Public Address system, "Dear passengers, the MRT tracks from Ang Mo Kio and Bishan needs some maintenance. Please kindly make your way to the nearby bus-stops. Our buses will send you to your destination. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience caused.'
I could hear the commuters waiting for the train grumbling and groaning. Right outside the MRT station, ambulances was in sight. The well-trained paramedics rushed towards the old man. They carefully carried the old man onto the stretcher. I heaved a sigh of relief. The old man could finally get proper medical assistance.
"Fresh air at last!" I could hear some voices. When I got home, I related the ordeal I had just experienced to Mum. She praised me for my quick wits and was proud of me. What a day!

Escalator trouble!
Whenever I look at a shopping mall's escalator, I will fell queasy and cold sweat would drip down my forehead. I could vividly remember the incident which took place five years ago, when I was in primary six. Since that incident, I have a phobia of taking escalators and will always take the lift. It all happened like this...
It was a blistering hot Friday afternoon. John, my best friend, and I were at United Square shopping for food - marshmallows, chicken and hot-dogs for my birthday barbeque the next day. We decided to eat mouth-watering ice cream first as we could not spot a supermarket in sight.
While savouring the scrumptious ice-cream, my eyes glanced around. I gestured for John to hold my ice cream as I squinted my eyes to look for an information counter.
"John! I spotted an information counter! I will go down to ask where is the supermarket," I exclaimed. Before John could say anything, I made a dash for the information counter, making zig-zacs and people. Like an expert, I dashed down the escalator, eyes fixed on the counter.
Just then, a sudden sharp pain shot through my right let. I glanced down. To my horror, my foot was stuck in the escalator! I was initially taken aback and could only stare in shock. Seconds later, I came to my senses and began frantically tugging at my leg. The pain was becoming more excruciating by the second. I felt as if my whole foot was being ripped off. I was approaching the end of the escalator. My hands turned clammy. I wanted to shout for help but nothing came out of my mouth.
Just at that instant, a man formally dressed saw me. Alert, he pressed the emergency button. A middle-aged woman covered her mouth in shock. After regaining her composure, she pointed to me and made a beeline for the information counter, seeking for help.
"James! Are you alright?" it was John. His jaws dropped when he saw me stuck. He rushed towards me and fished his phone out from his pocket, dialing for the ambulance. John comforted me and told me that everything would be alright and the paramedics and Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) were arriving soon.
I grimaced in pain. Tears were welling up in my eyes but I blinked them away, wanting to put up a brave front. There were many onlookers that stood there, pointing at me and taking photos of my suffering. I was aghast.
Minutes seemed like hours and finally, the paramedics and officers from the SCDF arrived. The SCDF officers used special tools and gears to expand the hole and slowly remove my poor feet. By that time, it was swollen. The well-trained paramedics carefully lifted me on the stretcher and with full speed, rushed me to the nearest hospital. My parents were notified and they arrived to the hospital in no time.
The doctor bandaged my leg in a cast and told me that I had to stay in the hospital for observation for three days before I could get discharged.
I will never forget it. Not in this lifetime. This incident will remain with me forever and ever. It made my have my birthday in a hospital room.

A Scam!
Mrs Tan, my sixty-old neighbour, stood in front of me, looking dishevelled. She was not her usual impeccable self. Her bright eyes were dilated and her hands were trembling. For a moment, I was speechless.
It was a Sunday night and my parents had gone out to attend a wedding dinner and instructed me to do my homework. When I had finished my homework marathon, I was about to grab a packet of chips and watch television when I heard frantic knocking on my door.
"Who could it be at this hour?" I mumbled to myself. Opening the door, I was shocked to see Mrs Tan looking the way she was. She was holding a white crumbled letter in her hands. I invited her into my house for a cup of tea to calm her nerves.
" Please! Please help me!" she sobbed, covering her face as tears streamed down her face. Wild thoughts raced through my mine. Is Mrs Tan in heavy debt? Did she have any accident? Did... I jerked myself out of my thoughts as Mrs Tan handed me the letter for me to read.
For a while, I was stunned. Then, I smelt a rat. Could it be a scam? The letter informed Mrs Tan that her precious son, studying overseas had met with a accident. It required her to transfer some money to an overseas bank account. As Mrs Tan's husband had passed away a decade ago, she was the sole breadwinner of the house and they had many financial problems.
I understood the situation and knew that Mrs Tan needed money. I remembered that I came across a newspaper article about how many old folks were tricked into believing that their children had been either involved in an accident or kidnap and needed money for ransom and treatment. Could Mrs Tan be one of the victims?
I tried calling Mrs Tan's son a few times but to no avail. Mrs Tan cried her eyes out. I silently prayed for Mrs Tan's son to be safe and sound. I could feel could sweat dripping down my forehead and my hands turning clammy. Was her son really involved in an accident?
Just at that moment, Mrs Tan's phone rang. I t was her son! She immediately picked up the phone. I could see her tears of joy and a wide smile forming on her face.
"I love you!" Mrs Tan literally hugged her phone as if it was her son. Mrs Tan thanked me for coming to her rescue and to find a plan to get hold of her son. I hope Mrs Tan will learn a lesson to not easily trust what is written on a mysterious letter and analyse the situation before making any certain conclusions. I also wish that Mrs Tan and her son's bond will stay even stronger than it is now.

A lesson learnt
I reached the edge of the shortcut just as the last glimmer of light left the sky. I stifled a yawn and wished that I was in my cosy bed sleeping like a log. I had just came back from Sue's house.
Sue was my best friend in school and she was a fun and amiable person. She invited me to come to her house to play as well as to bake a scrumptious log cake.
By the time I left her house, exhaustion was seeping through my body. I had decided to take the shortcut that led to my home. Although Mum gave me warnings countless times never to take the shortcut as there were wild dogs that attacked people, I turned a deaf ear.
The shortcut was a path through a big patch of grassland. I tiptoed through out the path as I knew that dog's ears are very sensitive and could hear even very soft sounds.
However, even taking such precautions, I heard a low growl coming from my right. Taking a step backwards, I had accidentally stepped on a branch that appeared out of nowhere.
The surrounding air became very still, almost eerie. I shuddered. My hands turned clammy. I quickened my pace. Soon enough, I was running for my life! The growl turned to menacing barking as a pack of wild dogs appeared before me. They bored their fangs.
Being the slowest sprinter in my class, the dogs could easily catch up with me - one of them even tore of the flesh off my ankle!
I grimaced in pain as I ran even faster - even faster than before. Nothing was in my mind. I only knew that I had to escape. Something bright suddenly caught my eye. It was the bright lights of the coffee shop at the other side of the short cut! Knowing it was my only hope to escape death, I made a beeline for my safety area - the coffee shop. I dashed recklessly across the road and turned around to face my attackers.
However there was nothing in sight. Did they disappear into thin air? I wanted to know, but I did not dare to go back again. All that remained of that harrowing incident was an excruciating bleeding ankle.
Tears began to stream down my face as I panted to my house. When I got home, I embraced my parents tightly, telling them what had happened. They bandaged my ankle before bringing me to the clinic for a jab and calling the National Environmental Agency ( NEA ).
I truly deserved what had happened to me. If I had listened to my Mum's advice, I would not be hurt or even be attacked by dogs. I had surely learnt my lesson the hard way.

The Birthday Gift - Written by my P4 bro - edited
The aroma of the scrambled eggs and bacon filled the air. Mum was busy preparing breakfast in the kitchen. Today was a special day - Mum's birthday. I grabbed the opportunity to sneak to my piggy bank and take out twenty dollars to get Mum a surprise birthday present.
Quickly, I sat down to eat my scrumptious breakfast. I then bade farewell to Mum and told her I had supplementary lessons after school that day.
The long day at school finally ended at 1.45pm. Excitedly, I put my plan to action. I sped - at full speed to the nearest shopping mall in sight, Junction 8. There, I browsed through the various shops. Just as I was about to exit a store, I settled my eyes on a cute wallet. I had a feeling that Mum was going to love this present. Grinning from ear to ear, I immediately got a staff to wrap the present up after purchasing it. Skipping all the way home with the present in my hands, I tried to visualize the expression on Mum's face.
No sooner had I reached home then sensed something was amiss. When I stepped into the living room, I thought how happy Mum would be upon receiving this gift. My happy thoughts were interrupted by Mum brandishing a cane. Her face was as dark as a thundercloud. Her face turned purple with rage and she boomed," Joel's mother told me there was no supplementary today! How there you lie to me!"
Before I could reply, I heard the swishing sound of the cane. The next instant, I felt the agonizing pain. It was as if she had put a red hot poker on me. She ranted and raved at me. Whatever I said, it was no use. She was blinded with rage. She hit me several more times while I pleaded with her to stop. It was to no avail. Suddenly the gift rolled out. Sobbing, I muttered,"Happy birthday Mum."
Mum's face turned pale. Surprisingly, she apologized to me. Enveloping me in her arms, she thanked me for the present and vowed to me that she would never jump to conclusions. As for me, I learnt never to lie , not even a white lie

Loan Sharks!
It was another mundane day at school- more homework and more projects. As I thought of watching my favourite cartoon, Spongebob Squarepants, my eyes lit up and I skipped all the way back home. I tossed my bag on the sofa, grabbed a packet of potato chips and jumped on the comfy sofa, switching on the television. I burst into peals of laughter watching Spongebob Squarepants running around my television screen. Reaching out for another chip, I suddenly heard a shout.
Curious, I peeped out of my house. Nothing. Thinking it was just my imagination, I shrugged my shoulders and was about to go back to my cartoon when I heard it again. Peeping out once more, I could se a burly man plastered in tattoos standing outside Mrs Tan, my neighbour's house. On the walls the were words that read 'O$P$'. This had to be the work of loan sharks. I fished out my handphone from my pocket to inform the police.
While I was making the call, I could see another loan shark walking out of Mrs Tan's house. He was holding Mrs Tan tightly by her hand, not letting her go. The two loan shards had the similar menacing tattoo of a red serpent on their right arm. One of them had a parang stuck behind his pants.
It was impossible to think that Mrs Tan would ever borrow money from the loan sharks. She was a kind, helpful and cheerful person. She would always bake cookies and share some with me! Who could be the one in her family borrowing money illegally? Could it be Mr Tan? I had to be him! With the open of the casinos, Mr Tan had changed drastically. He became addicted to gambling and drank a lot. It had to be him!
From the corner of my eye, I could see the loan sharks brandishing his parang in the air, threating Mrs Tan to pay up or he would slash her face. Mrs Tan, by that time was shivering in fear. She stood rooted to the ground, wanting to scream for help but nothing came out of her mouth. The parang was placed closer and closer to Mrs Tan's face.
I knew I had no more time to waste. I stepped out of my house and shouted at the the loan sharks. All eyes turned to look at me. I gulped as I had landed myself into trouble. The other loanshark started chasing after me hollering at the top of his lungs. Questions bombarded my mind. What if he caught me and chopped me up into pieces? What if I was held captive by him and never rescued? What if...
Luckily, in the nick of time, the men in blue arrived. The loan sharks tried to escape but were surrounded. Within minutes, the police nabbed the loansharks and some police took down our statements. They also informed Mrs Tan that Mr Tan would also be arrested for illegal money borrowing. She nodded as tears welled up in her eyes. I put my arms around her shoulder and comforted her
I was commended by the police for my brave act and I felt proud and happy for myself. I hope that the loan sharks would learn their lesson in jail and turn over a new leaf. As for Mr Tan, he should not have borrowed money form the illegal moneylenders so Mrs Tan would not have been through such an ordeal on an ordinary Friday afternoon!

Theft
Whenever I join the long queue at Lim's bookshop in the shopping centre, I would take a walk down the memory lane. I can still vividly remember the heated argument between Mr Lim, the owner of the bookshop and a girl, my friend Sally. It all happened like this...
It was a sweltering hot Sunday morning. Mum brought me to the nearby shopping mall, ABC Shopping Mall to shop for some things for my barbecue party the next day.
"Mum! I am going to get some party hats from that shop!" I exclaimed to Mum. She nodded her head and instructed me to wait for her outside Fairprice Supermarket.
Within minutes, I came out of the shops with heavy plastic bags in my hands. I ambled down the aisles of the shops to Fairprice to wait for Mum patiently.
"BANG!" A strange loud sound could be heard. I turned my head in curiousity to take a look at what the commotion was. It came from Lim's Bookshop's glass panel. I could see a girl, on the floor. When I was about to approach her, she turned around. I realised she was my best friend, Sally!
Sally was grimacing in pain and clutching onto her bag tightly. Mr Lim, upon seeing what had happened, rushed out to help Sally up. However, just before Sally got up, her bag made a ripping sound and all the contents of her bag poured out, strewn on the ground.
Sally gasped in horror. I could catch a glimpse of a book, titled The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which I longed for. Mr Lim frowned and picked up the book.
" Did you pay for this book?" Mr Lim asked suspiciously. Sally nodded her head nervously. Realising that Sally was lying, he inched closer to Sally looking vexed. I could sense an argument approaching.
" What a liar! You better confess now or I will call the police!" Mr Lim bellowed in anger. Trying to deny the facts, Sally pretended to look angry and shouted back at him. Bad-tempered Mr Lim was so angry that he could not control himself and pulled Sally by her collar. He clenched his fist and questioned Sally if she had stolen the book.
" I'm sorry... I did not have a choice. It is my best friend's birthday tomorrow and I had to buy a gift for her but I have no savings so I had to result in stealing," Sally confessed, tears welling up in her eyes. Touched and horrified, I rushed to Sally and hugged her.
" Please, Mr Lim, do not call the police! I will pay for the book on her behalf!" I begged. Seemingly happy by the answer, he nodded his head but set a stern rule that Sally would no longer be allowed to step in his bookshop again. Sally nodded her head vigorously and hugged me back.
" Sally, please promise me you will not steal again. This book is for you," I whispered to her. We hugged each other and smiled at each other. Sally regretted her rash act and never stole again.
" Ermmm... Miss, it's your turn," a voice jolted me back to reality. Smiling to myself, I stepped out of Lim's bookshop happy and proud that Sally decided to turn over a new leaf.

Pickpocket!
It was a glorious Sunday morning. Mum pulled me out of bed and told me excitedly that we were going to the market. Reluctantly, I got out of my comfy, soft bed and got ready to go.
Stifling a yawn, I walked towards the fish stall while Mum was choosing fresh fish and prawns for today's dinner. The fishmonger wore a threadbore vest and an old pair of shorts. His plastic-gloved hands handled the slippery fish with great dexterity.
"Pooh, what a stink!" I exclaimed as I pinched my nose. On a typical Sunday morning, like today, the market was bustling with people. Loud music blaring from the stalls competed with the noisy cries of vendors.
"Pickpocket! Pickpocket!" a voice shouted across the wet market. All heads tuned towards the direction the shout was coming from. It was an old, feeble lady, sitting on the ground grimacing in pain. A burly man gave chase to the pickpocket. Another man, my neighbour, Mr Lim, told people around the old lady to help her while he fished out his phone to dial for the police.
"There goes my marketing money! What am I going to do?" the old lady complained. Unfortunately, while the pickpocket was running for his dear life, he did not notice that there was a puddle of water on the floor. He slipped on the puddle of water and fell down, flat, on the floor. Soon, the burly man caught up and pinned him tightly to the ground.
The shrill sirens of the police car indicated the arrival of the men in blue. The police handcuffed the pickpocket, forcing him into the police car while some police took down the frightened old lady's statement.
"Let me go!" the pickpocket's cries could be heard from a distance.
Following that, the burly man passed the wallet back to its owner- the old lady. The old lady thanked him profusely and even offered him some money but he declined.
I hope that the pickpocket will know that crime does not pay. We hoped that he would turn over a new leaf. I admire the burly man for his courage. I hope I could be like him one day.

Model compo: Fire
Model
Composition: Fire
Q: You
and your father were at a crowded supermarket. When both of you
were queuing to pay for
your groceries, you heard the fire alarm go off.
The acrid smell of the smoke filled my nostrils.
I choked back my tears and informed Dad immediately. Smelling a rat, he glanced
around and told me to remain calm. We dropped our basket and stayed alert.
It was a blistering hot Sunday morning. Dad
and I had decided to bake a chocolate fudge cake for Mum as it was mother's
day. We proceeded to the nearest supermarket, ABC Supermarket to get the necessary
ingredients. The supermarket was bustling with shoppers and we made a beeline
for the bakery ingredient section to get some flour.
We lifted our heavy basket and proceeded to
the counter. While queuing, the shrill sound of fire alarm went off. Everybody
was shocked and parents hugged their wailing toddlers.
" There is a case of fire in ABC
Supermarket. Please do not panic and proceed to the nearest exits in an orderly
manner. Please do not use the lifts. We have already informed the fire
brigade." a stern voice bellowed through the PA system.
I could see thick black smoke billowing from
one corner of the supermarket. Pandemonium
broke out, people dashed off in fear, hoping to escape from the clutches of the
raging fire.
The flame was engulfing everything in its path
like a swarm of bees that had not eaten for days. Suddenly, something caught my
eye when I was about to evacuate. It was a girl about ten years old dressed in
a polka dot dress. She looked confused and was bawling. She seemed to have lost
her mother. Should I save her? Should I not? Upon seeing the blazing fire
inching near her, I was determined to save her. Running towards her, I could
feel the heat singe the hair on my skin. As I grabbed her tightly, I could feel
an excruciating pain in my leg as I struggled to the exit.
Fire spread itself throughout the whole
building like locusts destroying everything in its path. Everywhere, people
were taking off in all directions with fear visibly etched on their faces. The
fire changed from orange to blue as the temperature rose like the thick black
fumes that were stretching skywards.
As I stood opposite the building, I could see
thick black smoke rising above the building. The sounds of the sirens indicated
the arrival of the ambulance, fire brigade and the police. I heaved a sigh of
relief as I handed the girl over to the policemen before getting the paramedics
to check me for smoke inhalation. The paramedics checked my leg to make sure it
was no big injury and bandaged it for me. They told me that I would be alright
in a few days.
The firemen battled furiously to save the
burning supermarket, hosing down its walls with water. After fifteen minutes,
the fire was finally put out. Debris were all that were left of the
supermarket. Policemen took down statements of witnesses and started their
investigation.
The next day, when I was flipping through the
daily newspaper, I found out that the fire had started because the supermarket
did not repair a faulty socket. It became a fire hazard to the public and the supermarket chain apologized to the
shoppers. Luckily, nobody was seriously injured.
After this incident, I learnt an important lesson that we must ensure that all fire are under control in public areas so we will not pose a danger to the public.
